Herzog Zwei Strategy, part one

The units in the Herzog Zwei army

Now let's take a look at all the units at your disposal: Infantry, Motorbike, Armored Car, Tank, SAM, Gatling Gun, Boat, and Supply Truck.

InfantryInfantry - cost: $500 - The infantry is the backbone of your offense, by serving one crucial function: taking over minor bases. Remember: you need four soldiers to take over a base. Unfortunately, that's all they're good for; while Infantry uses no supplies, they are the weakest units in the game, and almost worthless in battle.

MotorbikeMotorbike - cost: $950 - The appeal of the motorbike is its speed. These are the fastest units on the ground; the perfect harassment tool for a quick run on a Home Base. On the down side, motorbikes are weak in ammo and armor, and the money is better spend on stronger hardware.

Armored CarArmored Car - cost: $1300 - Armored cars are the weapon of choice for the armchair general short on cash. These units are cheaper and have more ammunition than tanks. The trade-off is that the Armored Car is weaker than the tank; shots do half the damage.

TankTank - cost: $3200 - Ah, the tank; now we're cooking with gas! This is the definitive weapon in HZ. In roving packs, these babies are downright lethal. Just send four tanks to your friend's Home Base if you don't believe me. But the tank has weaknesses. Expensive and slow moving (especially on rough terrain), these units are somewhat vulnerable against the Mech.

BoatBoat - $3400 - For the maps with water, we have the boats. These units are strong, carry a lot of ammo, and are excellent for attacking Home Bases. The water gives them an added defense, too; you can only fire upon a boat from land, while the boats can just keep floating around. Its only faults (that I can think of) is its slow speed. Pricey, but worth it.

Mobile SAMMobile SAM - cost: $4300 - How do you stop the Mech? Simple -- you pull out the SAMs. This is how you stop that other Mech from flying in and dropping soldiers in front of your bases; this should be the backbone of your defense. Unfortunately, SAMs only attack airborne targets; they're completely useless against all ground units.

Gatling GunGatling Gun - cost: $15000 - Ouch! This thing costs more than my first year of college. But make no mistake, it's worth every penny. In addition to a powerful cannon against ground targets, the GG fires missiles against the enemy Mech. These missiles are slower than the SAM's, but they travel further and do considerably more damage. Their only weakness is their immobility, but this is primarily a defensive tool.

Supply TruckSupply Truck - cost: $1500 - Without steady supplies, your units will run out of fuel and ammo, and you'll be left up a creek (that's a Minnesota expression). Thankfully, supply trucks are dirt cheap. They sometimes have the annoying habit of driving around aimlessly when they're needed most, but there are a couple tricks around that (I'll tell you later). Be warned: supply trucks are completely defenseless..
