Herzog
Zwei Strategy, part one
A look at the maps (5-8)
Let's
take a look at the eight different levels in Herzog Zwei. Each map
carries its own unique qualities, and require different strategies
to succeed.
Level
5 Stadt - A futuristic city is the location of map #5. The terrain
is a little misleading; there are buildings and barriers that will
block any ground units. This makes some minor bases easier to defend
than others, but the open-ended nature of this level means you cannot
rest on your laurels. Add in the base layout, and you'll discover
there's no quick and easy victories here. You're in for a real fight.
Level
6 Eisfrei - Here is an advanced map that forces you to rely
on all those precious skills you've accumulated. Because you're
fighting on a snowy terrain, anything on tires or treads will have
a harder time moving around. The centerpiece is an inlet lake, with
three minor bases built on icebergs. you can go through the middle,
take the perimiter, or find some balance. The boats are best for
close-range Home Base assaults, since they can get caught by the
icebergs (much like the first level, Abgrund).
Level
7 Waldung - Next up is this excellent forest map. Similar to
the third level, Loch, this battlefield features large barriers
that cannot be crossed by ground units, but flown over with the
mech. At the center, you will find a large tar pit. It won't damage
your army, but it will considerably slow down anything that tries
to cross it. Obviously, it's to your advantage to avoid the pits
as much as possible.
Level
8 Oase - Finally, we have the battle of the Oasis. The long
body of water allows for Home Base strikes by boat, the many trees
offer the perfect natural defense for your minor bases, and the
field is surrounded by desert sands which slow down the movement
of your ground units. This map has everything! A perfect opportunity
for experts to truly test themselves.
