Herzog
Zwei Strategy, part two
Using Your Mech Effectively
You
finally have your own Transformer. Now it's time to beat down all
those RTS geeks and show 'em who's boss.
Repair
Tricks
There's
more to the Mech than flying around and shooting things. You need
to balance your different roles and responsibilities.
Here's
one technique that everyone should learn. You already know that
you repair your Mech by flying over a friendly base, right? Well,
any unit you carry will be repaired as well. Supply Trucks can refuel
units but not repair them. That's where you come in.
Pick
up a unit, then switch to the menu screen to check its status. If
its health is low, quickly fly to the nearest base. In a few seconds
(depending on which unit you're holding), your unit will be fully
repaired. Now put it back, and continue with the others.
This
is especially important for the units on your front lines. You have
to occasionally check up on all of your units; you don't want the
carefully built defenses at that base to crumble behind your back.
Drawing
Fire
Sooner
or later, you'll have to send your army against a well-fortified
HB. This can be costly in units, time, and money, especially if
Gatling Guns are involved.
Those
Guns have a weakness that you can exploit: they can fire their cannons
or fire missiles, but not both.
Here's
what you do. Send in your units and attack, than fly in and use
yourself as bait. The Guns will always fire their missiles against
you, and you can outfly those missiles, so you can effectively draw
their fire and avoid any real damage.
Just
remember that the Gatling Guns' missiles have a longer range and
do more damage than the SAM's. Just keep moving around and you'll
save your ground units for a few more seconds. Oftentimes, those
extra seconds will mean the match.
Some
Extra Notes
Sometimes
you want to chase the other Mech down and destroy it, and sometimes
you don't. Be sure to know when to let go; you don't want to chase
yourself into a missile ambush and get killed.
You
know better than to attack the HB with one unit at a time, right?
Build up a convoy before you send it out. I often find a safe place
or two and build up a squad of Tanks. Have Tank squads at more than
one base; then you can either send in several waves, or go for one
huge, final battle.
You
can use the occasional Tank as a Harassment tool. When you do so,
use the Mech to fly it in, and drop it at the most vulnerable side
of the HB (usually the back). If you really catch your friend by
surprise, you can do a terrific amonount of damage.
Of
course, if he/she doesn't learn their lesson and start building
defenses, keep up the attack. Punish ignorance.
If
you really want to be a jerk, fly in some Gatling Guns with your
HB assault. Drop a couple Guns at the edge of the HB, and, well,
you know. Your friend's probably going to start punching you after
a minute of abuse, but, hey, that's the mark of the best multiplayer
videogames.
Don't
make the "Transformers" sound when your Mech changes.
Seriously. Nobody likes a dweeb.
Most
real-time strategy games are for losers and are boring.
