Herzog
Zwei Strategy, part two
More Offense, There's Always More Offense
A
few more advanced strategies for offense.
Infantry
Flood
There
is a tactic in Advance Wars that is pretty popular. It basically
involves overwhelming your opponent with wave after wave of infantry.
This is similar to something I use in Herzog Zwei.
Mastering
Herzog Zwei means learning to do several things at once. Sending
out a flood of infantry to capture bases should always be a priority.
They're inexpensive and very fast to build, so you can always send
at least a couple soldiers off from where you are.
In
this example, I've sent out a flood of infantry (4 shown here).
Another four are capturing one of Red's bases, these four are slogging
through the tar pits (did I mention the pits are a pain?), and another
two or three are wandering around.
Be
sure to fly out a little bit before dropping your soldiers off.
Sometimes, they just aren't that bright, especially in the more
enclosed levels. If you see them bumping into forests and walls,
just pick them up and move a little. Infantry will find a nearby
base.
The
key is to adapt to what your opponent does, and force him/her to
face several problems at once. If you can effectively combine an
Infantry Rush with Motorbike Harrassment, some Sabotage and a convoy
base attack, you'll own the game.
Attack
on Several Fronts
Another
key to mastery lies in attacking on several fronts. You can send
all the Tanks you want towards the HB; if they drive into a wall
of Gatling Guns, it's all a waste.
Again,
you can't do everything at once, so you want to throw your opponent
off-balance by working on multiple fonts. This can mean mixing an
Infantry Flood with a convoy assault on a minor base. This also
means hitting HB from different angles. Stadt, the city map, is
a perfect example. From each of your three minor bases, you can
send out Infantry; you can Harass; you can assemble small convoys
(1-2 units) for the final push.
There
are examples of this on nearly all of the battlefields. Send out
your units, then fly to the next base and repeat. Remember my example
of the Tank-and-three-Cars convoy? The HB was wiped out in ten seconds
flat.
Some
Extra Notes
Remember
that convoy you sent to an opposing base? Here's an interesting
quirk: once your soldiers finally capture that base, your vehicles
will drive off towards the next nearest base. This can be used to
your advantage.
If
a Cross Formation of SAM's or Gatling Guns is giving you trouble,
just send out a row of Tanks in their direction. If you can take
out one of their units, you'll release their Supply Truck, which
always wanders off. Pretty soon, the ammo runs out, and your headaches
will be easier.
If
you're going to destroy enemy units yourself, be mindful of where
their guns are pointed. Those Tanks have to turn their turrets before
firing back at your Mech, so be sure to attack from behind.
On
levels with water, be sure to place vehicles where they can destroy
incoming Boats. There's nothing worse than watching a Boat wipe
out a heavily-defended HB that can't hit.
