Herzog Zwei Strategy, part two

Thinking Offensively

Now let's move from defense to offense, with more examples of using surrounding terrain, and attack convoys.

Taking Advantage of Terrain

Using the trees to protect precious SAM's.You should learn to take advantage of the natural terrain that presents itself in the different levels. We've already seen examples of formations on the islands, and there are other examples as well.

For instance, the trees on Oase provide a perfect cover from enemy fire. In this example, I have some SAM's take cover behind some trees, so they can fire missiles on the opposing Mech in relative safety. I've also placed a Tank between some trees for added cover (using the Attack When Approached order).

When you have the funds, you can substitute the SAM's for the Gatling Guns, which can also attack approaching vehicles in addition to the Mech. Remember that taking out that Mech is your top priority!

Use terrain to your advantage. Loch and Waldung stages have walls and forests that cannot be approached from above (except for the Mech). Use that to your advantage.

Terrain and Attack Convoys

a small Tank convoy tucked away, waiting to strike.Using terrain can be applied to offense as well as defense. Here is an example of something I do on the City level, Stadt. In the photo, I have a small convoy wedged in the narrow passageway between two opposing minor bases.

This is one of the hot spots on Stadt, which many players will overlook (it's easier to use all those wide-open spaces). You don't want infantry sneaking through bottlenecks like this. With my convoy, however, I'm in perfect shape to mount my own attack on Blue's minor base below, or even better, an assault on the HB.

Note that the Tank is in front. That's because it's the strongest unit, and can take the most damage.

More Ideal Tank Convoys

Oftentimes, you're going to have to plan on your friend flying in to interrupt your attacks, so you'll have to build your convoys accordingly. Ideally, your army should be able to take care of itself, so you can take care of other things. You have to find a balance between playing General and playing Soldier.

A convoy of Tanks and SAM'sNow, against the Mech, you need air defenses to take it out. This is a perfect example of a strong convoy - a combination of Tanks and SAM's. The Tanks should handle enemy vehicles, and the SAM's will keep your friend at bay. If you provide a little air cover yourself, you'll have no problem securing enemy bases. Just follow up with a flood of infantry to capture the territory.

This is where proper base defense is so important. If your bases are only defended with a couple weak units (or worse, nothing at all), you're going to lose precious territory.

More Convoys: Tank - SAM - SAM - Tank - Tank. Experiment, find out what works best for what you. And don't think you need a massive army; I've taken down Blue's HB with one Tank and two or three Armored Cars.
