Herzog
Zwei Strategy, part two
Some level-specific tactics (1-4)
Let's
jot down some notes about general tactics needed for the first 4
levels in Herzog Zwei.
Level
1 Abgrund - First thing is to capture two or three bases as
quickly as possible. Because you both start with nothing, there's
no threat of an early assault. Next, make sure to control one of
the three small islands, especially the middle island. Don't overlook
the bases on the upper-right corner; you can mount an effective
back-door attack against Red's base from there. But the bottom-left
quadrant is the main front.
Level
2 Vulkan - The two major hot spots will be the two bases at
the bottom-left corner, and the neutral island at the upper-right.
You'll need to capture bases, so what I'd suggest is to tie your
opponent down one one front as much as possible, and sneak some
units through the other way. I'd also use Motorbikes for Harrassment
now and then. Don't lose your 3 bases! If you do, you'll be royally
screwed. Be careful with the lava, which will fry all of your units
with ease.
Level
3 Loch - This is the best defensive level in the game, so that's
how you should plan. This isn't a good place to send swarms of convoys
or infantry, since they often get lost. Instead, focus on your air
defense and fly your units in whenever possible. The two neutral
bases in the middle are the most important, since that where you
can safely attack the HB with waves of vehicles. The bottom-left
bases will be a major flashpoint. That's where I'd put most of my
eggs.
Level
4 Strand - My favorite map, if only because I dig the boats.
You need to control at least one of the two middlemost neutral bases.
The boats are the key, as both as Harrassment tool and as a major
assault on the HB. Pile up on air defenses, at least four SAM's
on your middle base, plus a couple tanks, of course. Heck, drop
a tank on their main island just to keep 'em distracted, but don't
go flying around recklessly. And pay attention to your boats' fuel
levels!
