Gauntlet
Lives is something of a homage to one of the great videogame
maze games. Two players twist and turn through roads, pipe
walls, rivers and lakes. Plenty to see and plenty to do!
Instant
Martians: Most of the time, I'll give players
some units at the beginning, so everyone can skip the dull
formalities and get straight to the fighting as soon as possible.
For this map, you have two infantry, two APC's, and one attack
copter. Standard issue, really.
Extra
airports: As an added incentive to explore
the map, there are a couple neutral airports on the right
side. I'm always a big fan of airports, thanks to the cheap
price for copters.
Metal
Pipes: All three of the newest maps (#13-15)
feature pipes, thanks largely to the newest edition of the
Advance Wars map editor. It's a really great program if you
want to create complex levels quickly.
Anyway,
these pipes have many seams that can be destroyed. They don't
necessarily serve as castle walls (as in a couple other maps),
but they definitely aid your shortcuts to the enemy country.
On
the east, there are some ares that are harder to reach without
breaking the pipes. Always be aware of their defensive properties,
but don't be afraid to smash the seams when you need.
The
Long Slog: I wanted a map that followed
a different path from simply putting both players at opposite
ends. I was intrigued by the idea of putting both players
close together, but forcing them to take the long way around.
For
example, all the neutral bases are located to the east of the
main river, on the map's east side. You'll need to head around
the winding pathways to capture the necessary territory.
Gauntlet
Lives is much more of a long-scale war.
The
Computer: For some reason, the computer
isn't too bright on this map. Not that I really care; this
is meant for two people to play, but keep that in mind if
you want some practice.
Dungeon
Explorer: Now that I think of it, this map
is closer to Dungeon Explorer, the early Turbografx-16 release
from 1989, than the original Gauntlet. I wonder why there
has never been an outdoors Gauntlet? What's the deal with
that? |
