two other paintings, You Can Be Loved
and The Earl of Usher is Spider-Man,
I used olive oil here, as well as a base coat of gold spray paint.
This creates a great lustre, a dark mood. I was very impressed with
myself for creating these paintings, for their wonderful texture,
their saturation, their almost "classical" appearance.
My point that watercolors could, on canvas, replicate anything achieved
with oils, found its greatest success here.
Unfortunately,
as I discovered with You Can Be Loved, the gold spray paint
(used as a foundation) wouldn't hold the watercolors over time.
Eventually, the paints would peel and flake and come undone; this
usually happened over a period of weeks, but you could see the damage
as early as a few days.
I
still greatly enjoy this approach to painting. Ideally, if I could
find gold spray paint that isn't waterproof, peeling wouldn't be
a problem. You could use a lighter application of spray paint, but
then your colors won't be as bold. Also, I think it's necessary
to take the canvas off the stretcher bars, and put it in a glass
frame. Exposure to the elements is another likely culprit.
Earl
of Usher never had any problems, and this was because I used
far less paint than on the other two. That's something else to consider
if you want to paint watercolors on canvas.
Naturally,
this painting is not available for sale. At least you get to enjoy
the moment here. |
