| One
of the things I've tried to do as an artist is give more thought
to the names than the usual description or "untitled #612"
routine. For the Model Portraits, I wanted to go with first names,
instead of "woman by the table," so you knew there was
a real human being looking back at you.
I
also enjoyed the painterly aspect; it really does look painted from
scratch, instead of pop art. It's an effect I didn't really replicate
again; whether I was unable or unwilling is something I've never
solved. Shadows are used perfectly. They suggest, not point and
stare.
In
2000, I donated several paintings to an art auction at a gala for
the Architecture Building at the University of Minnesota; included
among them was a print of this piece. Fortunately, this was one
of the two or three works of mine to sell. I think it was a girl
who talked her boyfriend into making the winning bid. It was a very
rewarding experience; heck, even the food was good.
The
other painting was something I painted on canvas; I never took a
picture of that one for posterity, however, so it's probably going
to resurface when I've left and command a rediculous amount of money.
Unfortunately,
the original copy of Kari has been lost. Feel free to read
all about it on the Carpe Diem Baby
page. |
