March 15, 2005: According
to a Gallup poll released today, most Americans are opposed to
a war against Syria, Iran, or North Korea. This is very good
news, especially when looking at the numbers: 66% for Iran, 65%
for Syria, and 62% for North Korea. The
situation in Iraq is still an enormous mess, despite all the
hype over the January 30 elections. Our children are still dying,
sectarian violence continues to erupt, and there still is no
exit strategy. And there's not going to be. Americans have come
to realize this over the past six months, and regardless of their
opinions at the start of this war, they want their soldiers home,
and they do not want another war. The
disturbing thing about the Gallup poll is, you guessed it, the
Republican numbers. 46% are in favor of a war against North Korea,
43% for war against Iran, and 39% for war against Syria. This
isn't too surprising, considering how Republican voters are less
informed than other Americans (there are two studies that bear
this out. These are the people who still believe in WMDs, still
believe that Saddam was responsible for 9/11, still believe the
war has the broad support of Iraqis and the rest of the world. I'm
not a believer in blind partisanship, regardless of party. We're
seeing Orwell's warnings from 1984 play itself out among the
Bush faithful - the "Bushie Cult" as I'd call it. So
far, they've dutifully went along with what they've been told,
regardless of facts. If Big Brother says black is white, then
the Proles believe it is white. But this attitude cannot last
forever. Reality is going to impose itself, whether they like
it or not. It's
a very simple truth: if there is going to be another war, then
there's going to be a military draft. We don't have the soldiers
to fight Iran, Syria or North Korea. We don't even have enough
soldiers to maintain the status quo in Iraq, to replace the dead
and wounded. That's reality. Now,
Mr. and Mrs. Republican, where do you think those soldiers are
going to come from? They'll come from your families. Your children
will be the ones who will have to die. This isn't something you
can wish away with a dose of Limbaugh and Fox News. Is it worth
it? Are getting something useful in the bargain? Good
for you. You get your tax cuts and Roe v. Wade gets overturned.
And your children are coming home in a box. |
