Nevermind

1999 - Acrylics and Correction Fluid on Canvas

For today's commentary, we've got Nevermind, named of course after the Nirvana album that has since been enshrined among the giants of pop music. A wonderful album that really felt like a rush of fresh air in 1991, when hair metal ruled the airwaves. Nirvana, and all those great albums too numerous to mention, killed off "arena rock" for good. Good riddance, I say.

Nevermind was created just after Rainforest, and that's pretty evident if you compare the two. I wanted another lush, forest-like environment, but a little more imaginary, fantastical. Add some swirling, almost jazz-like, movements. It was something I was proud of, especially since (like Rainforest again) it took a long time for everything to come together. The clincher is the gold spray paint, which is intertwined with the red paint at various points. The reflecting light, when seen at different angles, allows you to see different elements of the painting as a whole.

Unfortunately, this isn't something that shows well in the photograph; you'll just have to take my word for it.
