much of my artwork, this piece is taken from popular music. In this
case, "Little Plastic Castle" is the title track to the
Ani Difranco album, one of her best. The painting shown above is
another in a group of four (including Mike
Tyson Eats Children, Mars Cheese
Castle, and Brooke Burke)
that I put together in Y2K that tried to apply the lessons, learned
from my Watercanvas paintings,
to acrylics. The other catch is that I used thick paper (I want
to say 300#, but don't quote me on that), instead of canvas.
The
b-side, like a lot of them, is very influenced by grafitti art.
The main challenge has always been this: what to write about? Do
I comment on my work or make references to other paintings? Do I
highlight social causes or current events? Do I quote famous people
and great minds? Do I just make a bunch of gibberish? And should
there be some unifying theme, or should there be a more random,
chaotic feel, like street grafitti? Truth be told, this is something
I still grapple with; more often than not, it all comes down to
each individual case. In the future, I suspect I may create grafitti
works that are on their own, instead of being the back-side to another
painting.
Oh,
and go pick up some Ani Difranco records while you're at it. |
