| Back
in 1998, I was playing around a lot with marker pens and spray paint
and liquid paper and the like. It was a style I had that dated back
to high school, and I was rediscovering my artistic side with renewed
vigor. This piece is probably my favorite of the entire series.
Jennifer
was actually a portrait of this girl I knew. She was just this black
hole, very moody and very depressed and very low self-esteem. She
also had a serious problem with bulemia. My friends and I took to
calling her "Happy Girl Jen," though not out of malice.
She had her entertaining moments, but, overall, she was just a black
cloud. That girl had the sad sickness.
As
for Jen, I haven't seen her in ages; no doubt, she's still in that
same damn hole, unlikely ever to get out alive. It's always sad
and tragic when you see someone like that.
On
a brighter note, I managed to sell this drawing to a woman while
exhibiting at a Chicago art fair in the summer of 2000. That sale
absolutely made my day, because nothing was selling at all. That
money pretty much went into the hotel room and the gas tank. In
other words, it was totally worth it. |
